When you think of summer in the French Caribbean, what comes to mind?
Turquoise waters? Lush landscapes? Tropical fruit?
Now imagine adding adrenaline-pumping sports, deep-rooted traditions, and island-wide celebrations to the mix.
Each summer, Martinique and Guadeloupe host two of the region’s most iconic events:
The Tour Cycliste – a multi-stage cycling race
The Tour des Yoles Rondes – a thrilling traditional sailing competition unique to Martinique
Far from being just sports events, they’re vibrant expressions of culture, history, and community pride, offering unforgettable experiences for visitors, especially students and educators seeking meaningful immersion.
1. The Tour Cycliste: Speed, Strategy & Caribbean Identity

Each summer, the islands come alive with the energy of the Tour Cycliste, a demanding multi-day race that pushes even elite riders to their limits.
- The Tour de la Guadeloupe, first held in 1948, is one of the oldest cycling stage races outside mainland France.
- The Tour de la Martinique, launched in 1965, has become a pillar of the island’s summer season.
Both tours are now recognized by the French Cycling Federation and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).Spanning over 1,000 kilometers in 9 to 10 stages, the course includes:
- Urban sprints through cities like Fort-de-France and Basse-Terre
- Mountain climbs across volcanic landscapes
- Coastal routes with sharp turns and strong Caribbean winds
The races, typically held in late July and early August, draw professional and semi-pro teams from across the Caribbean, Europe, and Latin America.
Fun fact:
The heat and humidity of the tropics make these tours especially intense. Hydration, strategy, and mental toughness are as important as strength and speed.

Jersey system:
Like the Tour de France, riders compete for distinct jerseys:
- 🟡 Yellow: general classification leader
- 🔴 Polka-dot: best climber
- 🟢 Green: best sprinter
- ⚪ White: best young rider
Beyond the race, these tours are deeply embedded in island life. Streets are decorated, youth organizations volunteer, and local spectators turn each stage into a festive, communal event.
For educational groups, attending a Tour Cycliste stage is an excellent opportunity to explore:
- Geography (terrain, climate, elevation)
- Civics & community engagement
- French & Creole language in context
- Media literacy through interviews, coverage, and commentary
2. The Tour des Yoles Rondes: A Unique Martinican Tradition

Nowhere else in the world will you find a race like the Tour des Yoles Rondes. If Martinique had a national sport, this would be it.
The yole ronde is a handcrafted wooden sailboat, lightweight and famously unstable with no keel or ballast. Sailors use long poles, called booms, to balance the vessel by shifting their weight outward over the water.
First held in 1985, the Tour des Yoles is now Martinique’s biggest summer event. The race unfolds over seven stages around the island, followed by thousands of fans along the coast, in boats, and on paddleboards.
Each team has its own name, colors, and cheering section. On race days, the island becomes a living festival of color, music, and community pride.
A single yole can carry up to 14 crew members, working in perfect synchrony. A true test of physical skill, coordination, and communication.ity pride.
